RWA 2017 - The Good, The Great, & the Awesome - A Recap Full of Writing Tips!

Saying there was a lot to absorb from my week at RWA is like saying I use the word kiss a lot in my books (58 times in newest manuscript!). I took pages of notes, and want to share some hot tips with you. Because that is what romance writers do - we share and lift each other up in a way that surpasses every other genre. WE LOVE ROMANCE! (yeah, I came back pretty pumped - can you tell?)

My life's not glamorous. AT ALL. I write in a tiny office under a blanket. Except for the fun that occurs at RWA. Which I am going to crow about to let aspiring writers know that it is possible. Seven years ago, RWA was at the same hotel. I watched a literary agency host a dinner for all their clients and wished desperately that could be me.

Well, it was this year. Back at the same restaurant - and I got attend BookEnds Literary cocktail party. With my talented chapter mate Mona Shroff who just got signed by them, so double the reason to celebrate!

What made it super glamorous? Going from there to hop on a shuttle to the Four Seasons (which got lost in the seamy backside of Disney) and the Avon party for all their authors. We're talking oodles of champagne. A cheeseboard to die for (watch the video! Watching the fireworks at the Magic Kingdom & Epcot simultaneously from the 17th floor terrace. But BEST of all - it was the chance to personally connect. To chat and network and laugh and knit together into a sisterhood of writers. That is priceless.

Then it was time to get on to the business of learning things. Handy tips gleaned:

  • Do Instagram stories - they get a much higher view ratio. 3-4 panes, 3-4/week.
  • Add a newsletter sign-up link to your email signature block
  • Try Buffer instead of HootSuite
  • Try Periscope for live Twitter
Personal Connections:
  • Make 'em. Get out of your comfort zone  and just do it.
  • I met with both my editor and my agent, and had conversations that were more productive and deeper than anything we'd done over email in the past year.
  • LOVED the PAN keynote speaker, Faith Salie, so I made a point of stopping her in the hallway to compliment her speech. She was warm and we chatted for a while before she took down my name to use in a future episode of Wait Wait on NPR. NEVER miss the chance to connect!
Craft Tips:
  • The 3 things that make a great book: compelling characters, conflict, and emotional triggers. A story about fascinating characters who pursue a worthy goal or face terrible consequences with sympathetic motivation (this is Virginia Kantra's description, and it is TERRIFIC!)
  • 5 points to building emotion: 1) Relatability, points of connectivity, 2) find your purpose, 3) proving yourself, 4) learning to trust, 5) self acceptance. Also, the story is the battlefield where characters defeat the demons of their backstory. A tip of the hat to Kristan Higgins & Sonali Dev for this advice.
  • If you take out the dialogue tags in a scene, can you tell who is talking? If not, you haven't made their personality strong enough. Great advice from HelenKay Dimon!
  • Rather than writing down all the notes, I'll just tell you to go read Story Genius by Lisa Cron for a very different way of looking a plotting a book. It'll jiggle some things loose for you, I promise!

  • I really wanted to register some epic Fitbit steps from running around this park, but it was a record breaking heat index day, so I was strategic instead and only hit 18,500. Sadness.
  • Food & Drink - the chocolate brioche in France was - honestly - the best I've ever had. The rim of black ant salt on my margarita in Mexico - actual ground up ants - did not add any flavor...but I'm sure contributed to the $14.75 price.
  • Take the extra day - wherever the conference ends up being. Do the sights. I won a massage from my awesome publisher and spent the 2nd half of Saturday being rubbed down and then drinking a mai tai by the pool. As a result, I came back only feeling half-dead for a change. #worthit

RT Convention 2017 - Wrap Up & What You Get Out of a Conference

Let's face it - conferences are expensive. Nobody is disputing that - even before you count in the bar bill :) So are they really worth it? What actually happens in that marathon of panels and parties? Hopefully my wrap up of last week's Romantic Times Booklovers Convention in Atlanta will give you some insight (spoiler - I love conferences, so I'm going to try and convince you they are awesome!).

Reader Parties - there are a lot. You will usually get some sort of snack and drink and swag. The truly awesome authors give books (raises hand and waves). I did a Beach Blanket Bingo party with probably 20 other authors (tip - we all shared swag. So when you get home, you can empty the bag and decide what to #1click). My bag was filled with a reader-a-holic bracelet, nail polish, 2 books, notepad, candy, book magnets...and some fellow authors did even more (#showoffs :) ). If you attend a party, you will walk away with your hands full and a smile on your face.

Avery Flynn, Lea Nolan, Eliza Knight and ME!
Craft Panels - I did three of these. The interesting thing was that I spoke to several people who came to listen who were not aspiring authors. They were just big-time readers who wanted to hear how the writing process works and soak up more of their fave authors in the flesh. Even more shocking, they seemed to truly enjoy themselves?!?!? The takeaway being that we authors do truly try to not just each, but make it a fun learning experience. I definitely got a lot out of the Newsletter workshop by the awesome Sarah Wendell of the Smart Bitches blog.

I presented on Seeking Your Voice, Seven Steps to Sensual Tension, and Worldbuilding in Every Genre. It was especially fun when Penguin Random House came to video our entire sensual tension workshop. Considering how many times Laura Kaye and I said the word 'cock', I'm really not sure what they plan to do with it...I met the awesome Lexi Blake, and immediately started reading one of her novellas on the train home.

Speaking of video, Random House also did a super fun ten minute interview video of me. Stay tuned for the Youtube link where I make up a story on the spot about a pirate and a tough-as-nails cop...

Book Signings - Here's where you can really rake in the free books. I *tried* to go to the Harlequin breakfast. For an event that was scheduled to last 90 minutes, they apparently ran out of bags and books from the biggest authors in only 15 minutes. By the time I got in I saw a mass of lines, no way to tell what author they went to, and no books left. But, had I gotten up early (anathema!)it would've been a haul. We did successfully do the Kensington party/signing - also a mad crush of people. But I got to hug Sonali Dev, so all the waiting in line was worth it. (Also full of snacks and drinks, for those of you keeping score). The Avon party/signing had the most books of all (and the best treats) by far (*note for strategizing next year!) and it was fun to hang out with all my new publishing peeps there. I got to sit next to the sweet and wonderful Kelly Jamieson at the Random House signing, and was thrilled to run out of my books in twenty minutes. The Giant Book Fair was loads of fun - loved sitting next to Lenora Bell - go buy her historicals!

No pictures to protect the innocent - yes, there were late nights in hotel rooms catching up with my friends. Yes, there was a wonderful dinner with my editor. And the noise level from the bar was still going strong every night no matter how late I went to bed. The best part - and what is always the best part of any conference - is the concentrated time with literally thousands of people who care just as much about books as you do. Everyone is friendly. I stood in the interminable line for coffee with Laura Stone - awesome! Did I know who she was before we started chatting? Nope. Didn't matter. We love reading (and/or writing). Period. So no matter how long you have to wait for the elevator or hate paying $5 for a muffin or, yes, have to stand in line for 20 minutes to get facetime with your fave author (#priceless) - it is worth it.

South Beach Sexiness!

Everyone has spring fever now, right? Temps are getting warmer, you're itching for some real heat....well, I've got that for you!

No boundaries.

Bartender and aspiring painter Maya Pascual loves turning up the heat. And dumping a vodka-and-karma chaser on the man who broke her heart is perfect Bronx girl payback. But how can she resist when Miami playboy prince Javier Hernandez begs to make it up to her...

No regrets.

Between his disastrous personal life and his wealthy family’s meddling, Javi needs to get back on track. The only thing that’s certain is his passion for Maya. If she’ll just let him show her how sorry he is, maybe he can move on and start fresh. But one look in her gorgeous eyes and he knows letting her go will be easier said than done.

No rules.

Maya agrees to one dinner with Javi. But as their attraction threatens to combust, she wonders if a night of no strings, no repeats surrender is the only way burn off their desire once and for all. . . Unless the light of day reveals it’s impossible to let go.

"I lost sleep while reading this book. I needed to know what happened next. You cant help but fall for these characters and find yourself feeling for them. You will want to slap them, hug them, laugh, get angry, and swoooon. This book was worth the lack of sleep." -Goodreads Reviewer

Hot words coming up!

“This isn’t about getting my dick wet, Maya.”

“How do I know that?”

“Because, if it was, I wouldn’t consider a ten thousand dollar suit a small price to pay for seeing you smile with satisfaction.”

She laughed. “I’m sorry about the suit.”

He shook his head and a few strands of the hair she’d pulled out of his ponytail hit his face. “No, you’re not. But I don’t want you to be sorry. I want you to say yes.”

“Why? Give me one good reason.” She didn’t know whether she was rooting for him to fail or rooting for him to succeed.

He cocked his head to one side and licked his bottom lip. Lech.“Remember what I said when I promised to let you go?”

Of course she did. Nothing about that conversation had faded from her memory. “That this doesn’t mean that we’re not still friends.”

“We are still friends, Maya. A ruined suit and the way I want to fuck you six ways until next week doesn’t change that. I haven’t had anything like our friendship in a long time, and I miss you.”

The last thing he wants is to be stranded in a cabin with the one girl he's always wanted. The one girl who could destroy him.

CAGED, USA Today Bestseller Virginia Nelson -The Ragin' Cajuns right winger, Oliver Tremblay, learned that nothing good can stay when he lost his parents on 9/11. Maisie plans to melt the ice king's heart and prove she's just the girl to go skate to skate with him, whether he likes it or not.

THE WARM UP, Xio Axelrod - Subzero. That's what folks around the league call Constantine Zimin, hockey's best defenseman. He's unflappable. Stoic, even. No cracks in all that ice, not until he meets Suji Meriwether. The pediatric nurse has no time for bad-boy jocks who want to use her patients as props. But as soon as they meet, temperatures rise and their defenses fall.

CHECK MY HEART, Christi Barth - Kurt Lundquist can't resist the beautiful & compassionate nurse who eased his brother's last days, despite knowing she doesn't want any reminders of her 'death duty'. Lisette does want the hot but oh-so-sad hockey star. Can she lift him out of his grief - and will she want to once she learns his terrible secret?

FULL CONTACT, Andie J. Christopher -Leftwinger Anders Sorenson has never met the perfect woman before breaking up a fight at Dahlia Clarno's bar. BLADE, Avery Flynn - Bad girl Gillie Pike has gone straight, but someone with a lot of money wants to bring her out of retirement to steal the Cup and make sure it's found in star goalie Flynn Kazakov's possession. They call him Crazy-kov for a reason and nothing makes him more nuts than his best friend's sexy little sister who swears she's the only one who can keep him out of jail and on the ice.

UNDER THE MIDNIGHT SUN, Kim Golden - Jonas Magnussen's icy blue stare has earned him the nickname the Iceman. On and off the ice, he's cool, collected and hard to handle. When an injury threatens to end his career, Jonas is faced with a choice he thought he'd never have to make. Mariam Kidane is the only woman who ever made Jonas lose his cool. A chance encounter with her melts Jonas's icy facade and leaves him wondering if life away from the league is such a bad thing, especially when it means a second chance at scoring the ultimate goal: love.

COURAGE, Lena Hart - Newly appointed head coach Mason Courage is in for the fight of his life. What should have been the biggest night of his career turns into the worst moment in his life when his wife Jules serves him with divorce papers. But this former bad boy isn't about to let anyone--or anything--breakup his family. For his wife, his children, his players...Mason is prepared to fight for them all.

PENALTY BOX BLUES, Robin Kaye - Stryker Gyllenhaal, enforcer on the Ragin' Cajun's, knows that once he hits Boise, his time spent in the penalty box is nothing compared to the payback Karma Kincaid has in store for him. When he finds out she has hired a handler, Trish Reynolds, his old college tutor, he's not sure who the real enforcer is. Karma, because she owns him for an entire week, or Trish, the only woman who knows his secret, and can slam his heart against the boards with a sideways glance. He is so pucked.

BEAR NAKED, Katie Kenyhercz - First Nations defenceman Bear Thompson wants to spend his day with the Cup back home on the reserve, but first he has to convince his childhood sweetheart and current band chief Aria Paul to give him another chance and that letting the media in won't be the end of the world. The last thing Aria wants to do is fall back in love with the man who broke her heart and left her in the dust, but old feelings spark new ones, and when Bear sets his sights on a goal, it's only a matter of time.

BLOCKED, Heather Long - Archer Durham's career has been defined by his badass attitude both on and off the ice, unfortunately it's biting him in the ass. After one too many unfortunate videos of him turned up on social media, both his fans and the press have turned against him. The win shines spotlight on the whole team and he needs to clean up his act...but what the hell does he know about being a knight in shining armor?

IN SKATES TROUBLE, Kate Meader - Right winger Ford "Killer" Callaghan can't believe he let the anonymous woman who blew his mind slip away into the night. He'll track her down because once could never be enough--even if discovering Addison Williams's identity places her strictly out of bounds. Stolen kisses. Secret hook-ups. Deliciously forbidden in every way. Can a passion that started in the dark find a lifetime of love in the light?

MAKING HIS MOVE, Susan Scott Shelley - Backup goaltender Rod Fraser is a free agent in every sense. He's ready for a new team, and hoping for another shot with his best friend's sister. But Arielle Charton thinks Rod's interest is fleeting, and she doesn't need the distraction. She's on a mission to rebuild her life. Rod's made his living making impossible saves, but it will take the impossible to convince the shy artist that she's captured his heart.

CHECKING YES, Misty D. Waters - Family secrets drove star left-winger Cooper Banks away from the love of his life, but hot off a championship win he's no longer satisfied with second place. Except the daddy's girl he left behind is now a woman no longer impressed by his charming smile. So when Savannah Jane Scott decides to put Cooper in the penalty box, she aims to keep him there...for good this time.

About Ride Wild (Raven Riders #3):

Brotherhood. Club. Family. They live and ride by their own rules. These are the Raven Riders...

Wild with grief over the death of his wife, Sam “Slider” Evans merely lives for his two sons. Nothing holds his interest anymore—not even riding his bike or his membership in the Raven Riders Motorcycle Club. But that all changes when he hires a new babysitter.

Recently freed from a bad situation by the Ravens, Cora Campbell is determined to bury the past. When Slider offers her a nanny position, she accepts, needing the security and time to figure out what she wants from life. Cora adores his sweet boys, but never expected the red-hot attraction to their brooding, sexy father. If only he would notice her...

Slider does see the beautiful, fun-loving woman he invited into his home. She makes him feel too much, and he both hates it and yearns for it. But when Cora witnesses something she shouldn’t have, the new lives they’ve only just discovered are threatened. Now Slider must claim—and protect—what’s his before it’s too late.

New WITSEC Series Announcement!

I Have A New Series!!!!!!!
My awesome new publisher, Avon Impulse, is excited about this three-book series, too. Want to know what it is about?
See my hint? Wait - let's take a moment to sigh over the awesomeness of one of the best written and best acted shows EVER. So hint #1 = mobsters.
my blue heaven
Except, you've all read my stuff. I'm not that dark and angsty girl. So my mobsters - ex-mobsters, actually - are a lot more light-hearted. More fish out of water funny, since they are in Witness Protection in a small town that they just do _not _ understand.
But my heroes - they are not like Steve Martin. Do not worry. They are far more in the vein of Han Solo. Bad boys with a heart of gold. Sexy as sin. Droolworthy and delicious. Three big city, bad boy brothers hiding from their mobster pasts struggle to fit into a small town but danger follows, putting their new futures - and their new relationships - at risk. So below (all subject to editorial change, of course!) is the lowdown on my bad boys - and look for the 1st book by this time next year!
Bad Boys Gone Good: Tiny and quirky coastal Bandon, Oregon—known for its cranberry festival and cheese—is the last place anyone would look for three brothers on the run from the Chicago Mob. At least, that’s what the US Marshals Service hopes. Rafe Maguire reached out voluntarily, asking to get his family put into witness protection. Staying in it, though…that’s not so easy. Their new, undercover lives don’t fit right. And fitting in is the only way to keep them safely hidden. There’s still a hefty sum of hidden cash waiting for them back in Chicago. Will falling in love be enough to keep them on the straight and narrow?
Too Bad To Love: Feeling indebted to the people who helped raise her, Dr. Mollie Vickers gave up a lucrative city career to practice medicine back home. She loves what she does, but her tiny Oregon town doesn’t allow for many dating options. And then a dangerously handsome mechanic she’s never seen before rescues her from a flat tire on the side of the road…
Rafe Maguire resents the hell out of having to run and hide. But he has brothers to protect, brothers he’d die for, which means they have to make things work in the latest podunk town where WITSEC dumped them--or else they’re out of the program. The last thing he needs is a woman complicating his life further, especially a do-gooder doctor he meets on the job. It shouldn’t matter that her body revs his engine and her smile thaws his long-frozen heart. No, it shouldn’t matter at all. It can’t.
Mollie starts to fall for the man who looks rough, talks tough, but takes the time to straighten out her hooligan cousin. She falls even harder as he weaves himself into the fabric of her beloved town. Rafe’s got his hands full with two pissed-off brothers to keep in line, a U.S. marshal watching their every move, and a new life - that doesn’t fit him at all - to somehow embrace. And yet Dr. Do-Gooder’s tender care of Rafe earns his loyalty and heats his blood. But Rafe can’t risk trusting Mollie with his secrets.
Their mind-blowing sex turns into something more. When she learns the truth, will Mollie choose to protect her town - and her heart - or take a chance at love with an ex-mobster who might not be as reformed as he thinks?
Too Bad Together Flynn Maguire looked - on paper - like a successful businessman. And he was - both at running a construction company and using it to launder money for the mob. Until they turned on him. .Now he’s starting over in a new town, forced into hiding by gangsters seeking revenge, and stuck bar tending. Which at least gives him plenty of time to stare at the pretty waitress with secrets in her eyes.
Sierra Woodley is on the run from a very big mistake - falling for the wrong guy. Who used her art to do something very illegal. All she wants is to stay hidden until she figures out what to do...and how to stay out of jail. Except she’s recently discovered that she wants something else. Or rather, someone else. The hot, brooding bartender who always treats her as gently as if she’s made of spun sugar.
The chemistry between Sierra and Flynn can’t be ignored. Neither can the fact that they’re both hiding pretty much their entire lives from each other. But can the heat between them last once the truth is out?
Too Bad To Handle Kellan Maguire was only a semester away from becoming a lawyer and fulfilling a deathbed promise to his dad when everything changed. Now he's on the run from the mob, living a secret life in an armpit of a town and working as a caddy. He’s mad as hell at his criminal brothers for lying to him about, oh, everything. The only bright spot is their U.S. Marshal handler. Yeah, he wants to handle her....a lot.
Federal Marshal Delaney Evans has protected a lot of bad, dangerous men. But the Maguire brothers are a whole different level of dangerous. Dangerously hot, to be specific. And in spite of all the rules it would break, she secretly fears she’d risk everything for one night with Kellan. Because the man is irresistible.
One night that is totally wrong turns into more nights that feel so right. But Kellan’s life is in danger when the mob tracks him down. Delaney’s career, her entire world, could implode if she admits how important he is to her. And all that is before the biggest complication of all hits…...

My book in there? A very fun backstage romance.

Linnea Larson is willing to do anything to keep her family’s Minneapolis dinner theatre from going under. Anything, that is, besides accepting a date from the Hollywood hunk hired to inject a dose of star power into their production of Guys & Dolls. It’s a toss up whether his greatest claim to fame is playing a superhero on screen, or a super stud off screen. Neither fact convinces her he’s got what it takes to share her stage.

Luke Powell has fame, fortune, and an endless string of women, but also a lingering dissatisfaction with his picture perfect life. Looking for a change, he escapes to his theatrical roots. What he finds are wary cast mates, a nervous best friend convinced the show will ruin Luke’s career, and an adorable costar who stubbornly refuses to go out with him. Suddenly singing and dancing aren’t the only challenges he’ll tackle over the summer.

Despite Luke dragging her into his daily paparazzi nightmare, Linnea can’t deny her mounting attraction to his irresistible charm. And even if she’s crazy enough to chance getting involved, their fling would have a guaranteed expiration date. He’s headed back to Hollywood at the end of the run, and she's tied to her family's theatre. Why risk the inevitable heartbreak? Their job is to act like they’re in love, but will they decide it's worth the leap to fall in love for real?

Logan’s dealing with his own issues (including a newly discovered half-sister) and he’s itching to get back on the road. More than anything, Brooke wants to be there for him. But first, he has to decide if love is enough to keep him in one place.
Sneek peek excerpt:
“We agreed, back on the island, to have a one-time fling. Because that’s all I’m good for. And now, yeah, I’m pretty sure we are in a relationship. Which I don’t know how to do. Which I didn’t want, because I don’t want to hurt you. And despite all that, I can’t stay away from you. Can’t stop thinking about you. Can’t stop craving you. Can’t stop wanting to share things with you. I can’t stop falling deeper and deeper for you. I don’t understand it, I don’t know how to deal with it. But I can not resist you.”

“Ditto,” she said, the word more breath than sound.

Without saying anything more, Logan’s lips landed on her neck. They seared a line from her collarbone, up to her ear, and once his hand shoved aside her hair, across her ultra-sensitive nape. A full-body chill made her jump.

Logan clearly took that as a sign to proceed. His hips surged forward, trapping her against the window. Not that there was anywhere else on earth that Brooke would rather be. The hard proof of his instantaneous arousal jerked against the small of her back.

His words had more than soothed her ruffled feathers. They’d wrapped around her heart like a velvet hug. They’d unlocked all of the feelings Brooke had been tamping down, out of fear that they wouldn’t be reciprocated. The future didn’t matter. Not right now, anyway. What mattered was that they cared for each other. A lot.

So Brooke abandoned herself to the intoxicating rush of sensation everywhere Logan’s body touched hers. Which was, indeed, everywhere. The towel covered little of him. And she didn’t want it to cover any of him anymore. So she yanked at its edge. Hard. Felt a rush of satisfaction when it swooshed to a puddle on the dark floor.

Logan chuckled, dark and dirty, right in her ear. “That’s how this is gonna go? You’re gonna try to rush me? Rush my thorough and proven mad lovemaking skills?”

“I don’t need skills.” Brooke reached around to grab his fine—and finally bare—ass. “I don’t need to be seduced again.” Then she dug her fingernails in just enough to make sure he got her urgency. “I just need you.”

“Sweetheart, it’s impossible for me to do this without seducing you all over again, every damn time. But there’s more than one way to do it.” Logan bit down on the curve of her neck. At the same time, he thrust one hand up the loose edge of her lemon-colored handkerchief top to cup her breast. His other hand wedged under her waistband to cup her. To cup her so intimately that a deep shudder ran through Brooke’s body.

God, she was more than halfway there, and she was the one still wearing clothes.

He squeezed, alternating hands, in a rhythm that had Brooke swaying and grinding against him in almost a dance. The whole time his lips kept sucking at the sensitive flesh along her nape. Brooke wanted to feel all of Logan’s skin that she’d just bared. But it didn’t seem the best use of her hands right at the moment. Instead, she slammed her palms against the glass to give her leverage to press into his touch. And hooked her ankle around his calf to connect them at yet another juncture. Just that tiny bit of rough hair against her skin upped Brooke’s arousal.

Everyone she’d slept with prior to Logan had been the same type: polished, urbane, a little too slick and/or earnest. Guys who need the frame of a suit hanging off of them to give them the proper manly shape and swagger. Logan needed nothing. He was rugged. Muscled. Masculine to the nth degree. So darned sexy that, yes, his calf hair turned her on. Which she’d never known to be a thing until this very moment.

Logan abruptly let go. Before she could complain, he undid the knot holding her top at her neck. It slid to the floor a second ahead of the skirt he thumbed over her hips. Then he banded an arm across Brooke’s stomach and lifted her off her feet. The move pushed a gasp of surprise from between her lips. He carried her from the window back over to the couch as she took advantage of the position to press a line of kisses along his jaw.

He spun her in mid-air so that she landed on her back. Logan moved the deep orange pillow against the high arm, and then pulled, hands beneath her knees, until her butt rested on it, leaving her spread wide for his hungry stare.
“You want me? You’ve got me, Brooke. I didn’t expect it, and I sure don’t know what to do about it. But you’ve got me now. So take me.”
