Foodie Romance That Will Sear You With Its Heat

StP_300 First, you need to drop everything and go peek at Amanda Usen's previous foodie romances (the ones that made me fall in love with her writing) - Scrumptious and Luscious. Then, dive into her newest release that will make your mouth water.

The best desserts are worth the wait…
Pastry chef Jenna Cooper crushed hard on playboy chef Roman Gallagher when her older brother brought him home to share their family Christmas six years ago. Now she’s old enough to do something about it, and she won’t take no for an answer—for anything.

Out of the frying pan into the fire…
Roman has one hard and fast rule—don’t sleep where you eat. But he can’t say no to Jenna’s plea for him to help her save her family business. Soon she's working for him, and their scorching chemistry melts Roman’s resistance.

If you can’t stand the heat… Jenna knows Roman has reservations about enjoying the heat between them, but she’s got a plan. She’s going to keep this sexy man so satisfied in—and out—of the kitchen, he won’t regret a thing. But Roman has his own ideas. He wants more than a few hot nights, and he's going to teach Jenna a lesson about playing with fire.

An excerpt from SEDUCING THE PLAYBOY:
She made it sound so simple. It would be easy to give her what she wanted, especially since he wanted it, too. He’d never felt anything as strong as the crushing need hammering at his balls right now. He wanted to believe her more than he wanted to breathe, to eat, or even to take over Gallagher Holdings. But this is Jenna. Despite her bold words and actions, he just couldn’t think of her in terms of no-strings sex. Hadn’t she just admitted to having a crush on him? Crushes weren’t made of quick and dirty; they were made of romance and fantasies. What would she do if he called her bluff?

He knew what she would do if he kept saying no—she’d never quit. She was too used to getting her own way, and there was no doubt in his mind they’d find themselves in this exact situation as soon as she regrouped. How long would he be able to resist? Whether he liked it or not, things had changed between them. But as much as his body was screaming for relief, jumping straight into bed with her felt wrong. Jenna wasn’t a random hookup.

Her lips brushed his ear and coasted over his cheek. By the time she reached his mouth, he had an idea. She wanted to play games? Fine, but they were going to play by his rules. Maybe he couldn’t ignore the chemistry between them, but he could damn well take charge of it. Until he was certain she wanted more than a few kisses to satisfy her teenage fantasies, he wasn’t going to do anything except give her a good long time to think about her choices. Playing games was his forte. He’d hold her hand and kiss her senseless, but that was it. He wasn’t going to jeopardize his relationship with her or her family because she’d gotten it into her head she wanted to sleep with him. After they spent some time together, she’d come to her senses and realize he was nothing like the fantasy guy she’d built him up to be.

He lifted her out of his lap and stood, pressing her against the door. With one hand, he caught her hair and tugged, pulling her head back. When her astonished gaze snapped to his, he bent to capture her lips, and her mouth opened in surprise. He plunged inside, taking possession of her in the way he had been dying to, honestly, no-holds-barred, proving he wanted her as much as she wanted him. It was ridiculous to pretend otherwise when he was hard as a rock.

He raised his head. “Let me get this straight. You want to have sex with me to get me out of your system? So you can go off and marry some guy to be your househusband without regrets, right?”

Her head fell back. “Stop torturing me, Roman.”

“I accept.” He stepped back, grinning. “But I have one condition.”

My contribution to this is an Italian stuffed turkey breast. This is a great alternative to a big turkey - it is perfect for two to four people who don't want a week's worth of leftovers. Plus, it is an elegant take on turkey that you can serve year round. Gibson Moore, my hero from Friends To Lovers, is from England and doesn't really get the fanatic devotion to carving up a 25 lb carcass at the table. He far prefers this elegant twist on tradition. Plus, it involves the word breast, which, as an unabashed Casanova, he always appreciates.

This is based on a Giada De Laurentiis recipe, but I've made some tweaks. If you aren't serving on Thanksgiving, a nice side dish is risotto.

Serves: 4 to 6
Ingredients
8 ounces sweet Italian sausage, removed from casing
1/2 cup seasoned bread crumbs or panko
1/2 cup broth
1/4 cup shredded parmesan
5 ounces prosciutto or pancetta (your choice!), finely diced
8 oz. chopped mushrooms
1/2 cup diced green olives
2 tablespoons chopped fresh sage or 2 teaspoons dried
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 (2-pound) boneless turkey breast
Extra-virgin olive oil, for drizzling
Special equipment: kitchen twine

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

In a bowl, combine the sausage, prosciutto, mushrooms, olives and sage. Season with salt and pepper. Heat a small skillet and add a teaspoon of the stuffing. Saute until cooked through, about 2 minutes. Taste for seasoning and adjust seasoning in the stuffing mix, if necessary. Mix in the broth, bread crumbs and parmesan to bind it all together.

Place the turkey breast on the cutting board with skin side down. Pound it flat, season with salt and pepper and drizzle with olive oil to moisten. Spread stuffing on top and roll the turkey around the stuffing. Wrap kitchen twine around breast and tie tightly.

Place turkey in a roasting pan, drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Roast until internal temperature of the turkey breast is 165 degrees F, about 1 hour or 12 to 15 minutes per pound.

Let rest 10 minutes, then snip off kitchen twine. Slice the turkey and arrange decoratively on serving platter. Pour pan juices over the slices and serve.

Sweet and Sexy CoffeeHouse Romance Release!

I'm thrilled to share with you the release of book 2 in the Dare Valley Series, French Roast by my friend, chapter mate and critique partner Ava Miles. Love a woman who knows what she wants? Love coffee? Love a sexy chef? Then this series is for you!
Small-town biz wiz Jill Hale has been in love with her childhood best friend Brian McConnell for as long as she can remember. A falling out led to years of estrangement, but when Brian returns to Dare Valley after trying to make it big as a chef in New York City, Jill’s determined to make amends. She’s convinced that starting a restaurant together will be the perfect win-win situation, allowing her and Brian to work together and play together.
After a series of missteps sliced and diced Brian’s career in the Big Apple, he came home to regroup and find himself. He’s convinced that reestablishing his connection with Jill, the girl who got away, will put his life back on track. And when she approaches him with her plan for going into business together, he’s certain it’s the one way he can have it all—his dream job and his dream girl.

Jill and Brian are falling for each other all over again when Brian’s ex sashays into town, intent on sabotaging their reunion. Add in a mysterious investor who’s determined to get Jill on board with his project, and the bond between the couple is tested to the limit. Will their second chance at love implode, or will they find their own recipe for a happy ending?

Here's a peek at some foodie foreplay:
Tonight had to lay the foundation for the whole can they make it thing? He couldn’t remember ever feeling this much pressure over sex. Well, maybe a little. To please. To perform. But never before had his whole future been on the line.
He ladled the soup into the bowls and carried them to the table. The sausages looked good when he opened the oven, juices bubbling out the meat when he speared them with a fork.
When she came back in, he didn’t have the heart to tell her she had red splotches on her neck. He turned back to the sausages and decided they were like a bad joke. Why hadn’t he picked something that didn’t resemble a dick? Like pork tenderloin. Hell, even that had “loin” in it. Why hadn’t he realized how sexual meat was? Legs. Breasts. Loin. Throw in shank, and you had Lady Chatterley’s Lover.
She came up next to him. “Can I help?” Her gaze fastened on the sausages. The red spots intensified. “Do you want me to take…these…over to the table?”
Yeah, she was thinking the same thing. Hot juicy sausages. Freud said there were no accidents. His subconscious must have had a field day—he’d made enough for leftovers.
“Sure,” he managed, fighting the urge to clear his throat as he slid them onto a platter. “I served up the soup.”
Her hands gave a lurch, and the sausages slid a little. He reached for the platter to avert disaster. She gave a semi-hysterical laugh. “That would have been awful. Bunch of sausages rolling around on the floor.”
She set the platter down with unusual precision. He grabbed the bread board and knife and sat down across from her. As he poured the beer, Jill couldn’t seem to take her gaze off the sausages.
“Jill. Your beer,” he said when she didn’t take it.
“Right,” she murmured, eyes darting away like she’d gotten caught looking at something dirty. The red spots now resembled sunbursts.
“To us,” he toasted, lifting his glass.
She almost spilled her beer when she clinked his glass too hard. “The beer’s good,” she commented and then focused on the soup with an intensity that made him sure she was trying to avoid the hot, steaming sausages between them. The candles flickered in the awkward silence. He nudged the platter toward her, but refused to say, you want one? He had clearly won Most Idiotic EntrĂ©e Choice of the Year. It could be a new James Beard category.
She still avoided the sausages, grabbing a slice of bread like a Titanic passenger pouncing on a life preserver. Spent way more time than needed buttering it before taking a nibble. “Everything is so good.”
Everything was shit. He might as well put it out there. “So, the sausages were a bad choice.”
Her leaf green eyes flew to his. “Were you trying to give me some secret message?”
“Jesus,” he said, taking the platter off the table. “Not consciously.”
Her breath heaved out. “Good. I thought it was some sort of strange foodie foreplay.”
The idiocy of the whole situation had his laughter bubbling up and over. “Foodie foreplay? Oh God, that’s a good one.”
Jill gave a sputter. “Yeah, I mean, I’ve heard about dessert, oysters, all that, but then I saw those sausages. Couldn’t be any clearer. Although they did start to shrivel in their casing as they cooled. Did you notice?”
Brian kept laughing. “Jesus Christ. This is ridiculous. I couldn’t even ask if you wanted one. I was too embarrassed.”
When she joined him in the hysterics, he made his way back to the table.
“I felt like I was in seventh grade. Remember how we used to giggle every time Mrs. Kelly used to say ‘penis’ in biology?”
His shoulders shook. “It wasn’t the word so much as her lisp. Pee-nith. We almost wet ourselves. Pete used to ask the dumbest questions just to make her say it. Oh, God.”
“My stomach hurts from laughing this much,” Jill said, wiping her eyes. “At least the bread and soup don’t have any hidden messages.”
Brian put his finger to his mouth. “No, I’ve got nothing.”
“Me either. I could barely eat as it was.”

Ava Miles' first novel, NORA ROBERTS LAND, kicked off The Dare Valley Series and brought praise from reviewers and readers alike. Much to Ava's delight, USA Today's Happily Ever After blog praises the book saying it "combines small-town romance with big-world issues in a full-bodied romance" and noting its "great hero...wonderful, idyllic setting... [and] great characters" while Joyfully Reviewed calls it "warm, funny and totally entertaining" and Romance Reviews Today highlights the "chemistry between Meredith and Tanner, and... [the] dangerous, exciting plot line woven throughout."

Now, Ava reaches out to readers once more, bringing them her new novel, FRENCH ROAST, and taking them back to the small, Colorado town of Dare Valley and the residents who make it memorable, including the Hale family who, like Ava and NORA ROBERTS LAND heroine Meredith  Hale, are descended from a long line of journalists.

Ava's great-great-grandfather won his first newspaper in a poker game in 1892 and her family has had something to do with telling stories, whether to share news or, in her case, fiction, ever since. In fact her clan is still reporting on local events more than one hundred years later at their family newspaper.

Since childhood, Ava has been scribbling down ideas and writing. Despite having hundreds of pages under her belt, she says it wasn't until her characters "wouldn't stop talking" that she knew she had the perfect characters and a story arc she simply had to share, and thus, went on to complete the first of several novels she had begun. Having done so, she went on to write more Dare Valley novels and is currently at work on a novella and plotting her next series.

Having worked as an apprentice chef in a restaurant popular with celebrities, politicos, and other journalistic luminaries, and as a private chef while in graduate school, Ava had no lack of inspiration as she dealt with the foodie aspects tied to FRENCH ROAST and the restaurant central to her plot.

Born and raised in the Midwest, where her family's newspaper is located, Ava went on to earn an undergraduate degree in writing and advanced degrees in political science and conflict management. She is a member of the Romance Writers of America and Washington Romance Writers. She is also part of an unofficial group that regularly convenes a writing retreat at Nora Roberts' restored Inn Boonsboro in western Maryland. Having left behind the "day job," which took her, literally, all over the world, she now writes full-time in the peace and quiet of her northern Virginia porch-swinging-friendly community.

Like Food & Wine? Here's The Romance For You!

One of the best things about having author friends is getting to read their books early. So I can tell you that if you love food and wine, you'll love the hot new contemporary romance by my friend Eliza Knight. If the cover alone doesn't convince you, keep reading below for the blurb and excerpt!

THE REBOUND PACT  by Eliza Knight

Just one taste is never enough...

The attraction between Gabrielle and Holden still sizzles on the surface even after all these years since their last encounter. Having just experienced serious relationship breakups neither one is

ready to start again. Instead, they make a rebound pact. Casual sex, no strings attached—and rule #1? Don't fall in love. Problem is, with each scorching encounter, Gabrielle and Holden find
themselves falling hard and fast.

After college, Gabrielle Dane makes one terrific mistake. Thinking she's sneaking into her crush's bedroom at an all-night party, she ends up sleeping with her older brother's best friend. It’s only when the sun comes up that she recognizes Holden Bellamy. Mortified, Gabrielle leaves to train with a renowned chef in France, vowing never to return to her hometown and the awkwardness of her one night stand mix-up. But several years later, she finds herself doing just that, and she runs smack into the delicious man who makes her catches her breath.

Holden Bellamy, owner of Belle Ami, a critically acclaimed vineyard, has always had a thing for his best friend's little sister...even if she was off limits. Waking up to her in the morning several years back was a remarkable surprise, one that crashed and burned when she left town without a word. Now he's face to face with the woman he never stopped wondering about.

EXCERPT:

As she neared the exit, a sign caught her eye with a picture of purple grapes inside a wine glass, below it said: Belle Ami Vineyards.

“Perfect,” she muttered.

A stop at the vineyard to purchase a couple bottles of wine and then she’d head to her Dad’s place. She wasn’t ready for the conversation he’d want to have regarding Len. She stared at her empty ring finger on the steering wheel, tears already stinging her eyes. Her finger still showed the lines of where her ring had been.

Gabrielle followed the signs for the vineyard, pulling into a nearly empty parking lot, her tires crunching over the gravel. There were only three other cars parked.

Damn. She hoped they hadn’t closed already. She’d forgotten how everything in the town of Mount Airy kept farmer’s hours.  She climbed out of the car and walked toward the entrance. The door opened easily when she pulled, but she didn’t see anyone. She walked up to the bar and picked up the tasting menu.

Gabrielle loved wine. Had even volunteered at many a wine tasting event, pouring glasses, talking shop to wine enthusiasts, and even turning some non-winos into vino connoisseurs.

The Belle Ami merlot looked right up her alley with a tangy bouquet of pomegranate and cocoa. She turned in a circle, her fingernails tapping against the “green” pressed bamboo counter.

“Can I help you?” a smooth, sensual, very male voice said from behind.

Oh. My. God.

Gabrielle turned around slowly, unable to breathe. She came face to face with Holden Bellamy. His face itself was perfection in the flesh. Chiseled. A wide square jaw, cheek bones she’d kill for, kissable lips and a nose that spoke of good genes. Dark brown, nearly black hair cut short enough to be in style, but still rugged, a few strands falling over his forehead. Her entire body stilled as she gazed at him, wide-eyed.

He was just as alluring, if not more so than he’d been before.

A jolt of longing wracked her. Her belly fluttered. Goosebumps rose along her arms making her skin tingle. Memories came flooding back of their one night together. Her body hadn’t forgotten, even with the passing of time, and neither had her mind. But with those memories and the pull of her attraction came regret. For what she’d thrown away. For the hurt she’d caused him. For not telling him the truth.

He wore a tight black t-shirt with the winery’s logo on his right pec. His jeans looked to be designer and if he turned around… She gulped, gazing at his flawless physique and then back up into his crystal blue eyes that seemed to delve right into the center of her soul. A light bulb sparked inside her mind. Bellamy… Was it possible this was his winery? A play on words?

“Gabrielle?”

He remembered her. Her stomach tightened. Of course he remembered her. She’d known him for years. Her body trilled a tune, as if her flesh remembered the way he’d touched her. He flashed her a smile, showing white, faintly imperfect teeth. Teeth that had skimmed naughtily over her flesh.

“Yes, hi, it’s been so long…” She trailed off, feeling awkward at showing up here six years after walking out on him.
